US AMBASSADOR TO AFRICAN UNION IN PLEDGE TO PROMOTE YOUTH, EDUCATION AND ECONOMIC TIES

Addis Ababa, 6 October 2013- Incoming American Ambassador to the African Union, Mr Reuben Brigety has pledged to work hand in hand with the African Union to develop Africa’s youth and economic relations between Africa and the USA, among other issues.

“We share a common vision with the African Union; that of an Africa that is peaceful, prosperous and proud”, Ambassador Brigety told Commission Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma when he presented his credentials to her at the AU headquarters today. He pledged that the hallmark of his tenure as Ambassador to the AU would be in advancing the economic relationship, promoting education in Africa especially through the Pan African University and development of young people.

Dr Dlamini Zuma welcomed the Ambassador to the African Union and stressed the need to implement the tenets of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the American government as well as agreements reached in dialogues between the two parties.

Apart from being the U.S. Representative to the African Union (AU) Ambassador Brigety will also serve as the U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
