Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 29th January 2016: H. E Uhuru M. Kenyatta President of the Republic of Kenya and Chairperson of the Heads of States African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Forum, delivered an insightful presentation while addressing media representatives on the outcomes of the APRM Summit, held on Friday 29 January 2016 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He underscored the importance of the APRM in boosting the economic growth of the continent.
President Kenyatta reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that alternative mechanisms are put in place for the APRM to maintain its independence while calling on the Member States of the APRM to mobilise resources and bring forth transparency in the review of African governance systems.
“The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) that was started in the year 2003 is a self-monitoring mechanism which is a mutually agreed programme, voluntarily adopted by Member States of the African Union to foster and enhance high standards of governance”, stated President Kenyatta . He added that, its mandate is to ensure that the policies and practices of Member States adhere to the agreed values in areas of democracy and political governance, economic governance, corporate governance and socio-economic development.
President Kenyatta further encouraged all Members States of the African Union to join the African initiative developed by Africans and driven by Africans which he went ahead to note that is a great a platform for African governments to share experiences and best practices.
In his conclusion H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta called on the AU Member States to take full advantage of the APPRM mechanism as it is an institution that will provide an independent review on the progress of African governance towards the realisation of Agenda 2063.
The Press Conference was attended by high level delegates, AUC Commission staff and representatives from various media outlets.
