African Union Commission Chairperson approves the deployment of an election expert mission to observe the Presidential run-off election in Niger

Addis Ababa, 17 March 2016: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Her Excellency Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has approved the deployment of a team of six (6) election experts to follow up on the Presidential run-off election in the Republic of Niger, scheduled on 20 March 2016.

The first round of the general elections (presidential and legislative) in Niger were held on 21 February 2016. The two candidates to the Presidential run-off election are H.E. Mr. Mahamadou Issoufou, the incumbent President, and Mr. Hama Amadou from the opposition.

The deployment of a team of election experts to the run-off election in Niger is in line with the mandate of the African Union, which is to fully engage in the strengthening of the democratisation process in Africa, particularly by observing and monitoring Member States electoral process to ensure they are conducted in accordance with AU standards for democratic elections. The expert mission will be deployed from 17 to 25 March 2016.
