New York, USA – 18 September 2016: The African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has arrived in New York, at the head of an AU Commission delegation to attend the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which opened in New York, USA, on 13 September 2016.
The AU Commission Chairperson and her delegation, comprising the Deputy Chairperson, Commissioners and other Senior Officials, will among other engagements, participate in various High Level Meetings, including a Peace and Security Council Summit, with Heads of State and Government, Business Leaders from Africa and the international community.
During these meetings and events, the AU delegation will focus discussions on key aspects of Agenda 2063, Africa’s development blueprint, whose first 10 years implementation plan is already being rolled out.
The AU Commission Chairperson will deliver a keynote address at a High Level Event on “Implementing Africa’s Agenda 2063 and Global Agenda 2030 in an integrated and coherent manner in Africa.”
The theme for this year’s General Assembly Meeting is ‘The Sustainable Development Goals: A Universal Push to Transform our World,’ following the adoption of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development during last year’s 70th UNGA Meeting.
The AU Commission Chairperson is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon. This is likely to be one of their last meetings, as Ban Ki-moon is hosting his last General Assembly Meeting, given that his mandate ends this year. While the AU Commission Chairperson is not seeking a second term of office as the head of the AU Commission.
Other important meetings and engagements will include an AU Peace and Security Council Summit on South Sudan, a Ministerial Meeting on Libya, a Leaders Summit on Global Refugee Crisis and the US-Africa Business Forum.
Dr. Dlamini Zuma will also hold bilateral meetings with some African and Global Leaders on current international affairs.
