Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 28 April 2017: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), H. E. Moussa Mahamat Faki, is actively working on the actual implementation of the Decision on Institutional Reform of the AU, adopted by the 28th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State, State and Government, held in Addis Ababa, in January 2017. In this regard, he attended a meeting on the reform of the AU, which took place in Conakry, Guinea, on 24 April 2017.

The meeting was attended by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President Alpha Condé of Guinea, AU Current Chairman and President Idriss Déby Itno of Chad, immediate past Chairman of the Union. It should be recalled that President Kagame was mandated to oversee the implementation of the decision on institutional reform of the AU, in consultation with Presidents Condé and Deby Itno.

As a follow-up to the conclusions of the Conakry meeting, the Chairperson of the Commission decided to expand the mandate of the AU High Representative for Peace Fund, Dr. Donald Kaberuka, to include the overall funding of the Union. In so doing it will accelerate the implementation of the Kigali Decision of July 2016 on the financing of the Union and the additional financing measures as envisaged in the decision of January 2017 on the institutional reform of the AU.

The Chairperson of the Commission welcomed the prospect of working closely with the High Representative in his expanded role to implement the decisions of the Assembly of the Union so as to provide the AU with real financial autonomy based on a strong accountability mechanism that guarantees the optimal and effective use of resources.
