AUEOM Orientation and Briefing Programme Commences today in Nairobi

Kenya, Nairobi, 3rd August 2017 – In preparation of its short term election observers for field deployment, the African Union Election Observer Mission (AUEOM) in Kenya commenced a three-day orientation and briefing programme from 3 to 5 August 2017.
The AUEOM comprises of 90 Short Term Observers (STOs) and 14 Long Term Observers (LTOs) drawn from the Pan-African Parliament, African Ambassadors to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Election Management Bodies (EMBs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Think Tanks and the Academia from various African countries. The LTOs are deployed from 3 July – 26 August 2017 while the STOs are deployed from 28 July – 14 August 2017. On election day, AU observers will be deployed to 35 of the 47 counties in the country to observe election day procedures.
The AU Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) to the Republic of Kenya is led by His Excellency Thabo Mbeki, former President of the Republic of South Africa and Head of the AUEOM to the Republic of Kenya. The objective of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) is to make an independent, objective and impartial assessment of the Presidential Elections in the Republic of Kenya in accordance with the national, regional and international standards for democratic elections.
