The President and Parliamentarians of the Pan African Parliament (PAP) undertook a working visit to the United States of America, Washington DC, from 25 September to 3 October 2017, to advocate against the sanctions on the Sudan. The Delegation was led by the President of PAP, Honorable Roger Nkodo Dang.
The Mission was facilitated by H.E. Dr. Arikana Chihombori Quao, Permanent Representative of the African Union Representational Mission to the USA.
During their Mission in the States, the PAP Delegation visited several Members of Congress, the State Department as well as key Stakeholders to discuss the lifting of the sanctions in The Sudan.
The PAP Delegation explained in clear detail the situation on the ground and the humanitarian crisis resulting from the legacy of the sanctions which were imposed on The Sudan since 1997. After 20 years, the sanctions are becoming counterproductive creating unintended consequences which are affecting the social structure as well as the general population because of the penalizing economic and trade measures.
The Pan African Parliament is an Organ of the African Union established as a platform for the voice of the African people and has consultative and advisory powers.
On 6 October 2017, the United States decided to revoke economic sanctions with respect to The Sudan and the Government of Sudan. A milestone is achieved today not only for The Sudan but also for Africa.
