COMMUNIQUÉ ON THE MEETING BETWEEN THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE COMMISSION OF THE AFRICAN UNION AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

Addis Ababa, 1 November 2017: The African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, met yesterday with the President of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Corneille Nangaa. This meeting was a follow-up to the meeting they had during the visit of the Chairperson of the Commission to Kinshasa, from 28 September to 1 October 2017.

During their meeting, the CENI President informed the Chairperson of the Commission about the evolution of the electoral process. In this regard, he emphasized the determination of the CENI to do everything in its power to facilitate the organization, as soon as possible, of credible and transparent elections. He sought the support of the Chairperson of the Commission to help overcome the many challenges that lie ahead to deliver a successful electoral process in the DRC.

The Chairperson of the Commission praised the efforts of CENI, and stressed the importance of the rapid publication of a credible and as consensual as possible electoral calendar, so as to create the necessary trust among the Congolese political actors and to help defuse the current political tension in the DRC.

The Chairperson of the Commission reiterated the readiness of the African Union to accompany and support the electoral process, including through the provision of technical expertise and support for the mobilization of the required financial and logistical resources, both from the African Union Member States and international partners
