Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 29 November 2017 – The African Union organized a workshop from 27th November to 1st December 2017 to validate and adopt the indicators for the Continental Education Strategy Framework (CESA). During the meeting, participants deliberated and validated indicators to include in the CESA Monitoring and Evaluation Framework; agree on the CESA Report template in readiness for 2018 reporting obligations and launch the Education Planning Cluster and Peace and Education Cluster.

Dr. Beatrice K. Njenga, Head of Education Division of the African Union and Officer in Charge of the Human Resource, Science and Technology Department in her opening remarks highlighted that the CESA Indicator Framework provides a credible mechanism for monitoring and following up on implementation progress. Advocating for CESA, Dr. Njenga said: “The Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16-25) is the foundation on which the continental Education Development Agenda is built for the next ten years.” She added: “It leans on the African Union Agenda 2063 and is a domestication of the global Education Agenda 2030 and SDG4”.

Representatives of the Bureau of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee on Education, Science and Technology (STC-EST), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the AUC, NEPAD, UNECA and ADEA, Education Officers from SADC, EAC, ECOWAS, ECCAS, IGAD, CENSAD, AMU and partners Save the Children International, UNESCO, UIS, UNICEF and LabAfrique have participated in the meeting.

Africa’s Agenda 2063 recognizes the core value of Education, Science and Technology in generating the scientific knowledge, competences, and technological inventions for building the Africa We Want, while ensuring the development of the requisite values, innovation and entrepreneurial mind sets that will be key in ensuring a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa in this century.
