Addis Ababa, 8 March 2018: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, yesterday.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss how to reinforce the partnership between the African Union and the United Arab Emirates. In this regard, the exchanges focused on steps to be taken to increase Emirati investment in Africa in support of Agenda 2063; support to specific African Union projects; and the rejuvenation of the Afro-Arab cooperation.

Discussions also focused on regional peace and security issues, given the interconnectedness between stability in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf region.

The Chairperson of the Commission and the Minister agreed that experts from the African Union Commission and the United Arab Emirates would meet as soon as possible to determine modalities for the follow-up to their discussions and ensure the implementation of the decisions that were reached. A Memorandum of Understanding will also be developed, with a view to formalizing the relationship between the two sides.

The Minister invited the Chairperson of the Commission to visit the United Arab Emirates. The Chairperson was pleased to accept the invitation. The date of the visit will be set following consultations.
