African Union Commissioner for Political Meets with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden

Stockholm, 17 April 2018: The Commissioner for Political Affairs of the African Union Commission (AUC), Amb. Minata Samate Cessouma meets with H. E. Mrs. Margot Wallström, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Sweden on the sideline of the 2018 Stockholm Forum on Gender Equality.

The Commissioner expressed gratitude to Mrs. Wallström for organizing this timely meeting and recognized the powerful role of the Swedish feminist movement at the helm of the women struggle for gender equality and women empowerment.

Discussions revolved around the role of new culture and practice of politics that can make women and girls influence more effective and inclusive. The two further elaborated on the role and the place of women in politics and governance, in mediation and peace processes, highlighting the necessity to include women at all level of the sphere.
The Commissioner assured the latter that her office will remain open for continued engagement on issues relating to the mandate of her Department, and further reiterated that her Department would engage with Sweden through the Swedish embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, working in issues of common interest.
Commissioner Samate also briefed Mrs. Wallstrom on the AU Gender Directorate programmes and emphasized the AU leadership stance and exemplary policies on gender equality and women empowerment.
After exchange of views on broader women agendas around the world, the two decided to remain seized of the matter and both echoed their commitment to continue to work closely in deepened their collaboration toward successful deliverables on Gender Equality and on Women empowerment.
