Beijing, 3 September 2018: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AU), Moussa Faki Mahamat, met the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, this morning in Beijing, on the sidelines of the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss different aspects of the African Union-United Nations partnership, in the context of the 2063 and 2030 agendas, as well as peace and security issues.

On peace and security, the Chairperson of the Commission and the Secretary-General discussed various issues of common interest, including support to the G5 Sahel and its Joint Force; the African Initiative for Peace and Reconciliation in the Central African Republic; the Horn of Africa, including AMISOM efforts in Somalia and the need to mobilize more sustainable funding for the Mission, as well as the search for peace in South Sudan; and the upcoming elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They also exchanged views on the worrying situation prevailing in Libya, with the view to identifying ways and means to accelerate the resolution of the crisis facing the country, within the context of the African Union-United Nations partnership.
