The African Union Commission signs a letter of cooperation with National Geographic Information Institute

Seoul, Republic of Korea - 04 December 2018 – A Letter of Cooperation (LoC) was signed on 04 December 2018 between the African Union Commission (AUC) and the National Geographic Information institute (NGII) for the implementation of the African Minerals Geoscience Initiative (AMGI) project. The LoC was signed by H.E. Albert M. Muchanga, the Commissioner for Trade and Industry representing the AU Commission and Dr. Kiyun Yu, Director General of NGII. The signing ceremony took place at Lotte Hotel in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Within the framework of technical cooperation for the implementation of AMGI, the two parties have agreed in the signing of this Letter of Cooperation that will strengthen the existing relationship between the AUC and NGII.

Precisely, the areas of cooperation highlighted in the LoC include the following:

● Exchange of information between the two institutions
● Direct financial support to AUC including support for an African geologist attached to the Minerals Unit in DTI. Further discussions are still ongoing to establish the nature of direct support
● Exchange programme: NGII staff will be attached to DTI to support the programme
● AUC to provide project support letters to introduce NGII to beneficiary member states
● NGII to participate in African Union organized forums and other international forums which AUC co-organizes in order to publicize the work between the Republic of Korea and AUC.

Through the LoC, NGII and AUC acknowledged mutual cooperation and support in successfully implementing the AMGI pilot projects.
