“This historic achievement is the culmination of months of negotiations and the result of the steadfast and peaceful resolve of the Sudanese people, especially the women and Youth, for a democratic transition in Sudan,” said Chairperson Faki.

The Chairperson wishes to commend all the political actors, civilian as well as military, for their commitment and spirit of compromise by placing the country’s interests above all other considerations.

The Chairperson wishes to emphasize the imperative of ensuring that the Sudanese authorities and all armed movements also reach an agreement within the first six months as per the decision taken during the peace process, to ensure that there is comprehensive peace and reconciliation which should pave the way to democratic transformation in Sudan.

The Chairperson also takes this opportunity to make a special mention of congratulations to his Special Envoy Prof Mohamed El Hacen Lebatt and the Special Envoy of Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed, Ambassador Mahmoud Dirir, and their teams, for their exemplary and tireless mediation in support of the Sudanese actors to reach a consensual agreement.

The support and collaboration of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the neighboring countries of Sudan in this regard, is also highly appreciated.

The Chairperson also extends his gratitude to the international community for their support to a Sudanese-led process and the African mediation process that led to this positive outcome for the country, the region and the Continent.

The Chairperson further urges all bilateral and multilateral partners to redouble their efforts to provide Sudan and its transitional authorities with the necessary support during this key reconstruction phase of the country’s history.

The Chairperson urges the national parties to fully implement the commitments made, in order to meet the aspirations of the Sudanese people for peace, security, reconciliation and development.

The Chairperson further reiterates the steadfast and continued commitment of the African Union to accompany the Sudanese people in their pursuit towards a democratic Sudan.
