Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 03 October 2019: The new Libyan Permanent Representative to the African Union, Amb. Juma Ibrahim Amer, presented today his Credentials to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.
The Chairperson and the newly appointed Permanent Representative exchanged views on the need for a central role for the AU in the resolution of the crisis in Libya, and other continental issues of mutual concern.
Amb Amer commended the Commission and the Chairperson for the efforts deployed to find a solution to the crisis in Libya, which has impacted the lives of civilians and the stability of the region. He further stressed the need of AU ownership of the political process in Libya, stating that it is an African issue that should be resolved by Africans.
Amb. Amer further expressed his personal commitment, as someone who was actively involved in the drafting of the AU Constitutive Act, to safeguarding Africa’s interests and priorities, especially within the context of Agenda 2063 and other AU priorities.
The Chairperson, on his part, welcomed the newly appointed Permanent Representative of the State of Libya to the AU.
The Chairperson shared the priorities of the current Commission to advance peace and security agenda in the continent, as well as to strengthen continental integration, especially with the entry into force of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Chairperson emphasized the AU’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the situation in Libya, as has been articulated in its various decisions. He pointed out that he has, personally been following up on the AU proposal for a joint AU-UN Special Envoy on Libya to ensure a more proactive position of the AU in the process.
