Dear AWLN Women Leaders and Friends,

The world is facing an unprecedented situation that is considerably impacting on humanity, with particular effects on women and girls. We know that women are at the forefront of caring for loved ones and communities in times of crisis, often to the detriment of their own health, and we wish to express our solidarity with all AWLN Members in these dire moments. The African Union and the United Nations are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation, guided by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and Member States.

AWLN is finding ways that women can lead in the fight against COVID-19 without placing themselves and their communities at risk, in Africa and around the world.

We would like you to consider your roles in the fight against the spread of the virus and to address challenges faced by women, including gender-based violence experienced by women who are in home-based social distancing or quarantine and women in conflict zones.

We wish you and all your loved ones good health and safety.

In Solidarity,

AWLN Conveners,

Mme Bineta Diop
