The Special Envoy of the African Union Chairperson on Women, Peace and Security has followed closely recent tragic developments in Nigeria and wishes to echo the concerns expressed by the Chairperson of the African Commission, His Excellency Moussa Faki Mahamat, and second the call made by the Nigeria Chapter of the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN).

In this month of October when we commemorate the 20​ Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council 1325 anchored on the protection of women and girls against violence, the Special Envoy strongly condemns the violent escalation of October 20, which resulted in the killing of peaceful protesters. The citizens of Nigeria have a right to peaceful protest and the government has a duty to protect its citizens.
She expresses her condolences and stands in solidarity with the families of the deceased and appeals to the Nigerian Government to swiftly explore peaceful means of dialogue to deescalate the growing tension, investigate the killings and bring to justice the perpetrators.

The Special Envoy further pledges her commitment to supporting national efforts and work with the AWLN Nigerian Chapter to enhance the contribution of women in finding lasting solutions to ensure peace and security for the people of Nigeria.
