Addis Ababa, 07 December 2021: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has followed with keen interest the electoral process and the presidential election held on 4th December 2021 in the Republic of The Gambia, as required by the country’s legal frameworks.

The Chairperson of the Commission congratulates the Government, the people and electoral stakeholders of the Republic of The Gambia, notably the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Security Agencies, Political Parties and Candidates, the Media and Civil Society Organisations for contributing to the peaceful conduct of the presidential election which is adjudged by both citizens and international observers as ‘peaceful, democratic and conforming to national and international standards’.

With the final results of the election announced by the IEC, the Chairperson would like to seize the opportunity to congratulate the president-elect, Adama Barrow, on his re-election. He encourages the other candidates who may have concerns to address them through established legal and institutional architecture for dispute settlements in a manner that preserves peace and stability of the Republic of The Gambia.
