16 June 2023, Addis Ababa: The Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomes the closure, on 15 June 2023 in Gorongosa, Sofala Province, of the last RENAMO military base in Mozambique as a tremendous contribution towards silencing the guns in Africa. The demobilization of the last former RENAMO fighters is a true demonstration of the Government of Mozambique and RENAMO’s determination to sustainable peace, reconciliation, re-integration and sustainable development.

The Chairperson hails President H.E Filipe Nyusi for his leadership, devotion and commitment to building confidence and promoting reconciliation and tolerance among Mozambicans. The Chairperson equally lauds the commitment of the leader of RENAMO, Mr. Ossufo Momade, to have honored all the obligations agreed upon during the DDR process.

The Chairperson wishes to seize this opportunity to renew the AU’s commitment to support the Mozambican efforts to promote peace, security and stability in the country.
