Agenda 2063 is the blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future. It is the strategic framework for delivering on Africa’s goal for inclusive and sustainable development and is a concrete manifestation of the pan-African drive for unity, self-determination, freedom, progress and collective prosperity pursued under Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance.
H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, will lead a high-level delegation from the African Union (AU) Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) High Level Meetings, holding in New York, USA.
During the global event, the AUC Chairperson will be involved on a wide range of activities, including high level events, bilateral meetings, engagements with different African and International Community stakeholders, member states, and discussions on global issues of peace and security, financing, sustainable development, human rights, youth and women empowerment, health and climate change, among others, emphasizing the AU's role in promoting and advocating Africa's interests on the global stage. The outcomes of these engagements are expected to contribute to strengthening partnerships and collaborations for the benefit of Africa and the implementation of the Africa Agenda 2063, while promoting development and cooperation.
The AU delegation will take part in the High- Level plenary meetings and general debate that will start from September 23, 2025, on the overall theme: “Better Together; 80 years and more for Peace, Development and Human Rights”.

September 22, 2025: The United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on the thirtieth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing+30): resolution 79/288, under the theme: “Recommitting to, resourcing and accelerating the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”.
September 22, 2025: Sustainable Development Goals Moment, convened by the UN Secretary-General to review Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) progress and identify acceleration pathways, in accordance to Resolution 74/4 .
September 24, 2025: The first Biennial Summit for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Global Economy, on the theme “Implementing Commitments on financing development”.
September 24, 2025: Special Event on Climate; Builds on COP28 outcomes and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) commitments.
September 25, 2025: The United Nations General Assembly Fourth High-level Meeting on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of mental health and well-being: resolution 79/273, under the theme: “Equity and integration: transforming lives and livelihoods through leadership and action on noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of mental health and wellbeing”.
September 25, 2025: The United General Assembly high-level plenary meeting on the commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of the World Programme of Action on Youth: resolution 79/289, under the theme:” World Programme of Action for Youth at 30: accelerating global progress through intergenerational collaboration”.
September 26, 2025: The United Nations High Level Meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of nuclear weapons.
September 30, 2025: The United Nations President of the General Assembly High-level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar.
Several events have also been organized by the AU jointly with partners on the margins of the UNGA 80 on different thematic areas, most of which will be hosted by the Permanent Observer Mission of the AU to the UN in New York.
About the UN General Assembly:
The General Assembly (GA) is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the UN. The Assembly meets from September to December each year, and thereafter from January to August, as required. During the session, the Assembly considers current issues of critical importance to the international community in the form of High-level Thematic Debates organized by the President of the General Assembly (PGA) in consultation with the membership.
About the African Union:
The African Union spearheads Africa’s development and integration in close collaboration with African Union Member States, the Regional Economic Communities and African citizens. The Permanent Mission of the African Union to the United Nations (AU Mission to the UN) plays a pivotal role in representing the interests of the African Union within the United Nations system. The Mission advocates for African interests and concerns on a wide range of global issues, including peace and security, financing, sustainable development, human rights, youth and women empowerment, health and climate change. It works to ensure that African perspectives are considered and integrated into UN policies and decisions.
The Mission plays a crucial role in aligning AU positions with UN agendas and initiatives, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and peacekeeping missions. The Mission serves as a channel for information exchange between the African Union and the United Nations. It relays UN decisions, resolutions, and initiatives to the AU and provides the UN with updates on AU achievements and developments in Africa.
