The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, warmly congratulates Professor Phoebe Okowa of Kenya on her election to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The Chairperson said that "this achievement is a proud moment for Africa and a testament to the continent’s growing contribution to the strengthening of the global rule of law and multilateralism". Professor Okowa’s election reflects the high regard for her scholarship, integrity, and commitment to justice, values that resonate deeply with Africa’s vision for a fair and rules-based international order, he added.

The African Union Commission extends its best wishes to Professor Okowa as she assumes this vital role within the United Nations’ principal judicial organ, confident that she will continue to bring honor to the African continent and advance the cause of international justice.
