AU Peace Fund Board Strengthens Financial Governance and Resource Mobilization for Sustainable Peace and Security

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the African Union (AU) Peace Fund, on 10th October 2025, convened its 25th statutory meeting to deliberate on key issues related to financial governance, investment diversification, and resource mobilization. The meeting held virtually also advanced discussions on strengthening coordination and decision-making among the Fund’s governing bodies.

Chaired by H.E. Elene Mekonnen, the session reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to ensuring transparent, accountable, and sustainable financing for peace and security operations across the continent. Trustees reviewed the Audit Committee’s report, focusing on fund management performance, investment diversification, and the selection of custodian banks to ensure effective oversight and prudent financial management.

The Board reviewed the financial status of the Peace Fund, noting the current balance of USD 418.5 million. Trustees called for closer coordination between the Executive Council and the Board to ensure that future allocations are backed by available resources and established governance procedures.

The meeting reviewed the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for project financing, monitoring, and evaluation, together with the Five-Year (2025–2030) Resource Mobilization Strategy, and Communications and Advocacy Strategy. Trustees welcomed these frameworks as a comprehensive roadmap for expanding predictable and diversified funding to sustain peace across Africa.

The Board emphasized the importance of strong due diligence, transparency, and alignment with AU financial governance standards.

Trustees acknowledged ongoing efforts to enhance coordination between the Board of Trustees, the Executive Management Committee, and the Peace and Security Council (PSC) to strengthen oversight and ensure coherence in strategic decision-making.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and sound financial stewardship in the management of the AU Peace Fund. Trustees underscored that the Fund remains a cornerstone of Africa’s collective peace and security architecture, driving African-led and African-financed solutions in line with Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.
