Good afternoon.

I warmly welcome you all to this meeting of the two bureaux of the African Ministers of Trade and the Council of Ministers of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

You have a focused agenda and to assist you execute it fully and timely, the Senior Trade Officials met and worked diligently on 5th May, 2020 to prepare a report that is before you.

We will introduce the items in the report as you go through the agenda before you.

“The partnership with HP will accelerate our education response to Covid-19 to ensure accessible and continued learning for African youth”. AUC Human Resources, Science and Technology, H.E Prof. Sarah Anyang Agbor said at Extra-Ordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Education, Science and Technology held virtually on 30th April 2020. The virtual meeting was attended by AU Member States Ministers of Education.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 7 May 2020: The African Union Commission (AUC), United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) have signed a historic USD $40 million regional programme of the Spotlight Initiative to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in Africa.

Violence against women and girls occurs in every country and region across the globe. In Africa, the persistent rates of violence against women and girls impede regional progress towards gender equality, sustainable development, peace and prosperity.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 29 April 2020 – The African Union has intensified efforts to strengthen integration of gender perspectives by Member States in their response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Ministers in charge of gender and women affairs and the African Union Commission Women and Gender Development Directorate (WGDD), observed that gender inequalities have the potential to exacerbate the pandemic, and responses that do not incorporate gender analysis may worsen inequalities.

African Union Youth Sector Response to COVID-19

The African Union Commission (AUC), Human Resources, Science, and Technology (HRST) Department, is working on practical responses to ensure young Africans are taking personal responsibility to stay safe and ensure others do too during the Coronavirus pandemic. The response takes on a 3 x 4 model which focuses on reducing the health risk on young Africans, minimizing the impact of Covid-19 on their lives and mobilizing youth to be responders to Covid-19. The tenets of the response will be carried out through engagement, communications campaigns, innovation and partnerships.

WHAT: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has spread to almost all countries and claimed more than 240,000 lives worldwide. Nearly 50,000 cases have been reported in 53 African countries, with over 1,900 deaths. Africa CDC is supporting African Union Member States in responding to the outbreak. This briefing will provide updated information from Member States and new actions taken by Africa CDC and other partners in respond to the pandemic.
