African Leaders adopt Charter on Maritime Security, Safety and Development

Lomé, Togo, 15 October 2016: African Heads of State and Government have adopted and signed the African Charter on Maritime Security, Safety and Development on Saturday, 15 October 2016 at the Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government.  The adoption of the Charter followed recommendations for its adoption made by the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) and the Executive Council Sessions, which were held from 11-14 October 2016.

Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, said as she launched the, “African Union Campaign to Restore the Dignity of Women and to Ensure Accountability in South Sudan”. Condemning impunity in the strongest terms, H.E. Dr. Zuma reiterated the AU’s “zero-tolerance” policy on sexual and gender-based violence and decried the dire situation in Africa’s youngest nation.
