H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

Addis Ababa/Geneva, 26 January 2018 – African nations must renew their commitment and strengthen instruments to attain a malaria-free Africa by 2030, leaders heard today at a high-level briefing held on the margins of the 30th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa.
Addis Ababa, 25 January 2018 - The African Union Commission (AUC) is working on making a submission to the International Court of Justice ( ICJ ) regarding the Advisory opinion on the legal consequences of separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius in 1965. This is in line with one of the aspiration provided in Agenda 2063 “An integrated continent, politically united and based on the ideals of Pan- Africanism and the vision of Africa’s Renaissance”.
Addis Ababa, 24 January 2018 - The Office of the Legal Counsel (OLC) represented the Commission in Meetings held in Mauritius from 6 to 12 January 2018 to discuss the AU submission before the International Court of Justice (ICJ )The AU delegation was led by the Legal Counsel Dr. Namira Negm and composed of Dr. Mohamed Gomaa, who is the Head of Arbitration in Hashem Law Firm which is one of the leading law firms for international law in Africa .

24 January 2018, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Amb. Kwesi Quartey, held a bilateral meeting with the Alternate Chair of the Coalition for Dialogue on Africa (CoDA), Mr. Abdoulie Janneh to discuss, among other issues, the illicit Financial Flows and the relocation of the CoDA office from the UNECA to the AU Headquarters. The Deputy Chairperson noted the relevance of having CoDA at the AU Commission, observing its role as an alternative platform for dialogue and debate on key issues related to Africa’s development agenda.
Addis Ababa, 25 January 2018 - After the meeting held in Mauritius a letter dated 10 January 2018, by which the Legal Counsel of the African Union requested that this organization “(i) be permitted to furnish information, in writing and orally, on the question submitted to the Court for its advisory opinion and (ii) be granted an extension of one month for the filing of its written statement”.
