The End Learning Poverty for All in Africa (ELPAf) campaign was officially launched in Malawi on 20 June 2025. Malawi becomes the second country after Zambia to launch the campaign that seeks to address the continent’s challenges of foundational learning. With approximately 9 out of 10 children in Sub-Saharan Africa unable to read proficiently by age 10, this bold initiative represents the continent's most urgent call to action to address the learning crisis, which is depriving millions of children of their potential.

H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the AU Commission, met with IMF MD H.E. Kristalina Georgieva on the margins of the Mattei Plan Summit in Rome yesterday. He raised concerns over Africa’s mounting debt burdens & the disproportionate cost of servicing them. The Chairperson also underscored the need for more inclusive governance at the IMF, noting Africa’s underrepresentation in decision-making structures.
He echoed calls for reforms to amplify Africa’s voice and ensure fairer global financial governance.

The Chairperson welcomed Italy’s commitment to a renewed, equitable partnership anchored in Agenda 2063 and commended PM Meloni for her leadership in advancing strategic investments in infrastructure and sustainable growth.
