H.E President William Samoei Ruto (PhD), President of the Republic of Kenya and the African Union Champion on Institutional Reform. H.E. Ruto was appointed during the 37th Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2024 to champion the AU Institutional Reform process taking over from the H.E Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda who led the implementation of the reform process since 2016.

Chairperson of the AU Commission H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf met with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, H.E. Filippo Grandi this morning . They exchanged views on the regional displacement context & reaffirmed the imperative for coherent & coordinated regional & international responses. The Chairperson welcomed UNHCR’s continued partnership with the AU.
This morning, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf signed the book of condolence at the Embassy of the Republic of #Zambia, following the passing of former President Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

They had productive discussion on the situation in West Africa & the Sahel, regional integration, & sustainable financing for African-led peace support operations.
H.E. Dr. Touray reaffirmed ECOWAS' commitment to working in close coordination with the AU in advancing the continental peace, security, and integration agenda.
Chairperson Youssouf reiterated the AU’s unwavering support for ECOWAS in the fulfilment of its mandate.
AU Commission Chairperson H.E. @ymahmoudali met with H.E. Leonardo Santos Simão, Special Rep of the UN Secretary General for West Africa & Sahel & discussed the evolving political & security landscape. They exchanged on the Sahel crisis, They affirmed the AU-UN cooperation to advance peace, stability & democracy across the West Africa & Sahel region.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission , H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, received the Executive Secretary of IGAD, Dr Workneh Gebeyehu for strategic consultations aimed at deepening AU–IGAD collaboration & enhancing institutional coordination with Regional Economic Communities (RECs), under Dr. Workneh’s current chairmanship.
Discussions focused on joint responses to pressing regional challenges, including the situations in Sudan, South Sudan, & Somalia, as well as developments in the Red Sea arena.

This morning, H.E. @ymahmoudali, Chairperson of the AU Commission, received the letters of credence from H.E. Dr. Mohamed Khaled, newly appointed Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia & Permanent Representative to the African Union.
The Chairperson commended Algeria’s steadfast commitment to the AU & its instrumental role in advancing continental priorities.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. @ymahmoudali, met with H.E. Agostini Palese, Ambassador of Italy to Ethiopia. They discussed the upcoming Italy-Africa Summit and deepening regional cooperation.
The Chairperson thanked Italy for hosting the Summit & for its investments & development initiatives under the Mattei Plan, as well as its continued support to AU-led peacekeeping & mediation efforts.
