New York, 21 September 2025 – The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, concluded a series of high-level engagements at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, underscoring the AU’s commitment to advancing multilateral cooperation in pursuit of peace, security, and sustainable development.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, strongly condemns the heinous drone strike carried out on 19 September 2025 against civilians gathered for the dawn (Fajr) prayer at El Fasher Mosque in North Darfur, which claimed the lives of more than 75 innocent worshippers.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, will lead a high-level delegation from the African Union (AU) Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to participate in the 80^th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80) High Level Meetings, holding in New York, USA.

On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, reaffirms the fundamental importance of democracy, the rule of law and good governance for peace, stability, and sustainable development on the continent.

The Chairperson recalls the normative frameworks adopted by the African Union, in particular the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, which remains the reference instrument guiding Member States in their efforts to consolidate democratic institutions and promote citizen participation.
