        Body

The African Union Commission,  through the African Migration Observatory (AMO) and the African Union Institute for Statistics (STATAFRIC)-, the International Organization for Migration, IOM's Global Migration Data Analysis Centre (GMDAC), and Statistics Sweden organized a Training of Trainers workshop on “Leave No Migrants Behind”, aimed to train selected AU Member States, RECs and other regional representatives on the 2030 Agenda and Data Disaggregation Guide, which developed by GMDAC in response to challenge of new data collection and reporting requirements in AU Member States.

The four- day workshop opened on 2nd November 2021, is a part of capacity development activities aimed at rolling out the disaggregation guide in selected pilot countries in Africa, in close partnership with government stakeholders, the African Migration Observatory (AMO), STATAFRIC, REC-level representatives, and other partners.

Opening the workshop, Ms. Leila Ben Ali, Ag. Director of the African Migration Observatory (AMO) highlighted the need of the African countries to develop and explore innovative ways of collecting data including administrative data for monitoring, review and evaluation of Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030.

“The two development agendas (Agenda 2063 and Agenda 2030) have aspirations, targets and objectives that address the phenomenon of migration in Africa. It is necessary to have a set of Agenda 2063 and SDGs indicators to closely follow up the phenomenon of migration in Africa, based on the migration status of African populations” she added.

On his part, Mr. Jean-Pierre Ntezimana, from Statistics Sweden, said that the training is one example of the joint activities aiming assisting countries to improve the production of timely, accurate and comparable statistics for an evidence-based policy.

“The goal of the migration and integration policy is that everyone should have equal rights, obligations and opportunities” he added, noting that the integration policy works can be measured/assessed with the help of statistics on migrant’s situation on the labor market, their housing situation, the income and living conditions of immigrants and also how they participate in the democracy.

The Workshop will also discuss disaggregation needs, interests and capacities of individual countries in Africa, to aid selection of pilot countries for targeted capacity development work.

Beyond the workshop, participants will become key focal points for data disaggregation topics in respective RECs, not only supporting future capacity development activities but also becoming an informal network to assist with knowledge exchange on disaggregation across Africa
