      • Paving the way for a sustainable AU Peace Fund: Strategic resource mobilization and enhanced governance take the stage
        Body

The African Union Peace Fund is embarking on a transformative path following its inaugural stakeholders’ workshop, which brought together key players from across the continent. The event convened the African Union (AU) Committee of Experts of the Fifteen Ministers of Finance (F15), the Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), the AU Finance Department, the Cabinet of the Deputy Chairperson, and major multilateral financial institutions such as Afreximbank and the African Development Bank Group. Hosted by the Peace Fund Secretariat, this workshop marked a significant step forward in enhancing the Fund’s governance, operational effectiveness, and long-term sustainability.

The meeting created a collaborative platform for partners to engage in meaningful dialogue, with constructive discussions focused on advancing the Peace Fund’s mission of supporting sustainable, African-led solutions to peace and security challenges. Stakeholders worked together to address several key priorities critical to the Fund’s future.

Among the main outcomes was the finalization of the framework for the Independent Evaluation Group (IEG), which will uphold the highest standards of accountability, oversight, and transparency, thereby reinforcing trust, credibility, and confidence in the Fund’s operations.

Participants also refined the draft Resource Mobilization Strategy, a strategic roadmap aimed at ensuring sustainable funding for the Peace Fund to effectively respond to Africa’s evolving peace and security needs. Additionally, the workshop provided a space to integrate technical input on the implementation of the recently endorsed Peace Fund Due Diligence and Compliance Policy, a crucial tool for enhancing the Fund’s governance and operational integrity.

Speaking during the workshop, Mrs. Dagmawit Moges, Director AU Peace Fund underscored the importance of partnerships in achieving the Fund’s ambitious objectives. She highlighted that the success of the Fund depends on collective ownership and active collaboration among a diverse range of stakeholders, including AU Member States, multilateral financial institutions, the private sector, and regional and international partners.

“The outcomes of this stakeholders’ workshop extend beyond the AU Peace Fund. They resonate across the continent, accelerating Africa’s progress toward Agenda 2063. By harnessing innovative, African-led peace financing mechanisms, we can not only prevent conflicts but also build a solid foundation for lasting peace and sustainable development.” Mrs. Moges stated.

The workshop featured a mix of insightful presentations, in-depth working group sessions, and forward-looking deliberations. Stakeholders expressed appreciation for the platform, recognizing its value in fostering synergy and alignment among key partners. The dynamic exchange of ideas and insights was widely acknowledged as a crucial step in driving the Fund’s progress.

H.E. Pahimi Padacké Lipelba, Chairperson of the Committee of Fifteen Ministers of Finance (F15): “We applaud the AU Peace Fund for their significant progress in resource mobilization and their steadfast engagement with a wide range of stakeholders,” he said. “Their close collaboration with the F15 Technical Experts demonstrates a strategic and coordinated effort to secure the long-term sustainability of Africa’s peace and security initiatives,” he remarked.

Participants expressed their satisfaction with the workshop’s outcomes, which reaffirmed the importance of harmonization, collaboration, and collective accountability as essential components in successfully implementing the Peace Fund’s priorities.

As the Peace Fund evolves, this platform represents a vital step in advancing innovative and sustainable mechanisms for financing Africa’s peace and security initiatives. With its focus on long-term sustainability, accountability, and operational excellence, the Peace Fund is shaping the narrative of conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and stability across Africa.
