The Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) of the AU Peace Fund convened its Second Statutory Meeting to review the status of the Peace Fund, assess ongoing Peace Fund-supported projects, and preparations for the upcoming Joint Retreat with the Board of Trustees (BoT), Executive Management Committee, and other governance stakeholders.

The meeting, which was held virtually on 1st April 2026, reaffirmed the IEG’s central role in strengthening oversight, transparency, accountability, and independent evaluation across the Peace Fund’s operations.

Chaired by H.E. Amb. Maria G. Harrison, Chairperson of the IEG, the meeting opened with remarks emphasizing the importance of the Group’s statutory responsibilities in reinforcing the credibility and effectiveness of the Peace Fund.

The Peace Fund Secretariat, through its Director, Ms. Dagmawit Moges, presented a comprehensive update on the current status of the Fund.

The Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) department presented an overview of Peace Fund-supported projects under the Crisis Reserve Facility (CRF) and the programmatic funding windows. Since 2023, the Crisis Reserve Facility has supported interventions in Somalia, Eastern DRC, South Sudan, Sudan, Libya, Mozambique, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Lake Chad Basin. The presentation also highlighted key achievements in preventive diplomacy, institutional capacity building, and African Standby Force readiness, while acknowledging ongoing challenges related to funding limitations, administrative delays, and the complexity of conflict environments across the continent.

In his closing reflections, H.E. Youness El Mesmoudi, Vice Chairperson of the IEG, commended the collaborative spirit among the governance bodies and reiterated the importance of maintaining high standards of integrity, independence, and professionalism in the Group’s oversight role.
