TO OFFICIALLY OPEN ON SUNDAY 28 JANUARY IN ADDIS ABABA

Official Opening of the 30th AU Summit:
The Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU will officially open on 28 January and close on 29 January 2018, in the presence of the AU leadership, officials of the AU Commission and Organs; the representatives from partner Organisations, the Diplomatic Corps and invited guests.

The opening ceremony will feature among others, speeches and keynote address by H.E. Mr. Alpha Conde, President of the Republic of Guinea and outgoing Chairperson of the African Union; Statement by H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the AU Commission; Statement by H.E. Antonio Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations ; Statement by H.E. Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) ; Statement by H.E. Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States .

High moments of the official opening of the AU Summit will include the election of the new Bureau of the Assembly of the African Union and the new Chairperson of the African Union for 2019.

Participants will listen to the acceptance statement of the incoming Chairperson of the African Union. They will witness the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Awards 2017 to the winners and laureates of the year; the migration to “Ending of the Road Show for Dot Africa (.Africa)”; the launching of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM); the introduction and moderation of the Theme of the Summit by H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda; the presentation of the Theme the Summit by H.E. Mr. Muhammadu Burahi, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Champion of the Theme of the Year 2018, among others.

A group photo of the Heads of State and Government will also take place during the opening ceremony of the 30th AU Summit.

Objective: The 30th AU Summit will consider in close session the report of the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, as well as adopt Assembly decisions and declarations.

Participants: The 30th AU Summit will bring together all the Heads of State and Government from the 55 African Union Member States. For two days, the African Heads of State and Government will convene to deliberate on the different items on their agenda including the consideration of the report of the Executive Council; the Annual report of the Chairperson of the Commission for the period January to December 2017 and the report on the implementation of the Assembly Declarations including that on the Solemn Commitment on the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).

The AU Heads of State and Government will further deliberate on the progress of the implementation of Agenda 2063. They will consider the reports of H.E. Abdel Fattah El Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt and President of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) on the activities of the PSC as well as the state of peace and security in Africa; the report of the PSC on the implementation of the AU master roadmap of practical steps to silence the guns in Africa by year 2020; the report of H.E Mr Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of Congo and Chairperson of the High Level Committee on Libya, among others.

Journalists are invited to cover the official opening and closing ceremonies of the 30th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit, on 28 and 29 January 2018. They are also invited to cover the photo session during the opening ceremony.
