Ensuring participation and representation of women in the blue economy is a driving force for the economic development of the continent in all sectors. This was the prominent key message coming out from the Women in the Blue Economy Workshop that took place from 16-17 June 2022 in Abuja, the Federal Republic of Nigeria.   

Participants at the workshop exchanged views on the African Union Blue Economy Strategy and ensuring women’s empowerment in the fisheries development sector. The workshop also reflected on possible ways of financing women’s participation in the blue economy.

Addis Ababa, 06 July 2022: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, has learnt with concern the reports of attacks in the Welega zone of the Oromia region in Western Ethiopia resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians. 

The Chairperson deeply regrets the loss of life and calls for an investigation into these attacks. He further urges the Federal Government of Ethiopia and Regional authorities to undertake the necessary actions to protect all civilians, including minorities, and ensure that such incidents are prevented.

Brazzaville, 5 July 2022: H.E Kwesi Ahoomey-Zunu, former Prime Minister of the Togolese Republic arrived in the Republic of Congo to lead the African Union Electoral Observation Mission (AUEOM) deployed by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E Moussa Faki Mahamat and AUC Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, H.E Ambassador Bankole Adeoye. The main purpose of this AUEOM is to observe and report on the holding of the local and legislative elections of July 10, 2022.

Pan-African Parliament elects new leadership

Hon. Senator. Chief Fortune Charumbira from Zimbabwe has been overwhelmingly elected as the new President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) at the just concluded Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Ordinary Session of the Fifth Parliament held in Midrand, South Africa. Hon. Charumbira who was nominated to contest for Presidency of the PAP Bureau by his Southern Africa Caucus received 161 votes out of 203 votes cast with 31 members abstaining from voting while 11 spoilt papers were recorded. He takes over from Hon. Roger Nkodo Dang from Cameroon.

African Union Peace Fund: Board of Trustees convene Meeting to Review Progress on Operationalization

The African Union Peace Fund Board of Trustees held a meeting to review the status of operationalisation of the AU Peace Fund. The Peace Fund is intended to be the principal financing instrument for peace and security activities in Africa and finance activities in three thematic areas: Mediation and Preventive Diplomacy; Institutional Capacity; and Peace Support Operations.
