The African Union International Centre for Girls and Women’s Education in Africa (AU CIEFFA), the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), and World Vision International (WVI) Liaison Office to the African Union jointly convened a side event during the 11th commemoration of the Africa Day of School Feeding, held in Gaborone, Botswana, from 28th February to 1st March 2026. The session took place on 28th February under the theme “Integrating Education, Nutrition, and WASH to Advance Girls’ Education in Africa.”

On the occasion of Adwa Day, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, commemorates the historic victory at the Battle of Adwa of 2 March 1896.

“Adwa was a defining affirmation of African sovereignty, dignity, and unity,” the Chairperson stated. “It sent a powerful message that Africa would determine its own destiny.”

He emphasized that the spirit of Adwa continues to inspire the continent’s aspirations under Agenda 2063. “As we confront today’s challenges, we must remain united. Africa’s strength lies in its solidarity.”

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf strongly condemns the missile and drone attacks carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the sovereign territories of Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and the Saudi Arabia.

These actions constitute a clear violation of sovereignty and territorial integrity and risk further destabilizing the Middle East at a time when restraint is urgently required. He said that African Union Commission stands in full solidarity with the governments and peoples of the affected states.
