Africa faces growing financing pressures as rising debt service costs severely constrain development. By end-2024, public debt had reached USD 1.815 trillion, while annual debt servicing climbed to USD 163 billion, leaving 57% of Africans living in countries where debt payments exceed health or education spending. These escalating obligations not only erode fiscal space but are also directly reinforced by Africa’s persistently high cost of capital a systemic penalty that inflates borrowing costs regardless of fundamentals.

Ricklef Beutin, Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations & Chairperson of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), accompanied by other members of the PBC, at AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, today received Ambassador Elchin Amirbayov, Special Envoy of the President of Azerbaijan. Amb. Amirbayov conveyed a message from H.E. President Ilham Aliyev, including an invitation to the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum & the Leaders’ Summit in Baku in May 2026.

Their meeting underscored the commitment to strengthen AU–Azerbaijan cooperation, including through a prospective framework agreement to deepen strategic ties.

Nairobi, Kenya, 18 November 2025 - The African Energy Commission (AFREC) has launched a new continental training on Renewable Energy in Nairobi today aimed at helping African Union (AU) Member States turn renewable energy concepts into bankable and buildable projects while fostering peer-to-peer knowledge exchange in Africa. The inaugural session brought together 45 energy sector officials from across the continent for an intensive, week-long course on planning, development and financing for renewable energy projects.
