ADDIS ABABA, August 26 – Members of the African Union Permanent Representative Committee, Donors and Partner Agencies have recognized the magnitude of displacement in Africa and reiterated their commitment to finding durable solutions during a quarterly update session on the 2019 African Union theme: ``The Year for Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa.”

Background

Aspiration 6, of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 as well as UN SDGs, explicitly call for an Africa whose development is people-centered, relying on the potential offered by African people, especially women and youth, while the Agenda’s Ten-Year Implementation plan aims to achieve a 25% reduction in unemployment by 2023 and to specifically reduce youth and women’s unemployment by 2% per year.

Concept Note: 

Gender inequality is costing Africa over $95 billion annually and is a threat to sustainable peace; African women convene for inter-generational dialogue.

22 August 2019, Addis Abeba: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomes the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to improve the political and economic relations between the governments of Rwanda and Uganda that took place in Luanda, Angola on Wednesday.

The Chairperson commends the leadership shown by President Paul Kagame and President Yoweri Museveni to resolve their differences through dialogue in the spirit of regional cooperation.

AU, UN commemorate Women Humanitarians on World Humanitarian Day
