The Republic of Rwanda became the first AU Member State to sign the Treaty for the establishment of the African Medicines Agency (AMA) on 12th June 2019. The AMA Treaty was adopted on 11 February 2019 by the African Union Assembly during their 32nd Ordinary Session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, has approved the deployment of an African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in the framework of the holding of first round of presidential elections of June 22, 2019 in the country. The AUEOM is led by His Excellency Philemon Yang, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Cameroon. The Mission, which comprises thirty-five (35) observers, will be deployed from 19 to 29 October 2018.

Public health emergencies continue to be a major concern in Africa, thus threatening national, regional and global health security. A Public Health Emergency Operation Centre (PHEOC) serves as a hub for coordinating preparedness and response to public health emergencies. It allows a well-coordinated response to public health emergencies by teams of multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial experts using the Incident Management System (IMS). Only 14 AU Member States currently have a PHEOC and there is a need for capacity building to support the establishment and maintenance of functional PHEOCs by all Member States.
