Addis Ababa, 5 December 2023: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, strongly condemns the recent violence in Guinea Bissau, perpetrated by elements of the National Guard.

The Chairperson equally notes with concern the dissolution of the National Assembly. The Chairperson calls on the government and all national stakeholders to prioritise dialogue in the furtherance of peace and to respect the Constitution to ensure the preservation of stability and unity of the country.

The African Union Commission (AUC) announces the launch of the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the June 4, 2023 Parliamentary Elections in the Republic of Guinea Bissau. The short-term election observation mission comprises forty (40) members drawn from various AU Member States comprising AU Organs, notably, the Permanent Representatives Committee, Pan African Parliament, as well as Representatives of: Election Management Bodies, Civil Society Organisations, Independent Experts, Women and Youth. The AUEOM is supported by a team of experts from the AUC.

1 February 2022, Addis Ababa: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, follows with deep concern the situation in Guinea Bissau, marked by the attempted coup d’état against the Government of the country. 

He calls upon the military to return, without delay, to their barracks and to ensure the physical integrity of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and members of his Government and to immediately release those among them in detention.
