Introduction

The African Girls’ Summit is a continental platform dedicated to promoting the rights and wellbeing of girls across Africa. It unites key stakeholders to address harmful practices, including child marriage, sexual exploitation (online and offline), and female genital mutilation, through evidence-based dialogue, policy engagement and collective action. With the First African Girls’ Summit (AGS) on “Ending Child Marriage in Africa”, with the expected outcome on enhancing continental awareness on the consequences of child marriage, and how It will also accelerate the need to end child marriage in Africa.

The 2nd African Girls Summit (AGS) on ending child marriage was in Accra, with the theme “Enough with the Silence” in 2018. The main objective was to share experiences and good practices as well as challenges on ending child marriages at country, regional and international levels. While the 3rd African Girls’ Summit (AGS), under the theme: “Culture, Human Rights and Accountability – Accelerating Elimination of Harmful Practices”, was referred to as the “Niamey Call to Action and Commitment on Eliminating Harmful Practices” in Niger Republic from 16th-18th of November.

The African Girls Summit brings together representatives from African Union Member States, with more than 300 adolescent girls and stakeholders – including international organisations, civil society, organisations, traditional and Religious Leaders, with the protection of the Girl child at its core.
