AU Commission Chairperson congratulates Seychelles for smooth and peaceful elections, calls for serenity till process is concluded

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 20 December 2015: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has congratulated the people of Seychelles for smoothly and peacefully concluding a historic second round of presidential elections on 18 December 2015.

The AUC Chairperson takes note of the final results as announced on Saturday, 19 December 2015, by the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Hendrick Gappy, giving the country’s incumbent of the ruling Party Lepep’s, President James Michel, 50.15 percent, while his opponent of the Seychelles National Party, Wavel Ramkalawan, had 49.85 percent of the votes.

Voter turnout was reported at 90%. A maximum of 193 votes were reported to be difference between the contenders.

Announcing the results, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission called on all Seychelles citizens to “respect the results and to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.”

Nevertheless, the candidate of the Seychelles National Party, Wavel Ramkalawan, has not accepted the results and is reported to be challenging the results in court.

The AU Commission Chairperson expresses the African Union’s utmost faith in the judicial institutions of the Republic of Seychelles, and urges all stakeholders (citizens and political actors) to do same, to accept the final outcome emanating from the legal process.

In the meantime, Dr. Dlamini Zuma has encouraged the Seychellois to continue upholding the peace and serenity that has characterised the electoral process until it is completed.

The AU Commission Chairperson takes the opportunity to wish the people of Seychelles a peaceful and pleasant festive season.
