Africa stands in solidarity with Italy

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 26 August 2016: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has sent her deep condolences to the Government and people of Italy, and the European Union following the earthquake on 24 August 2016.

The earthquake of estimated 6.2 magnitude destroyed lives, livelihoods and infrastructure, in a historic centre. At least 250 people were killed and more than 360 others were injured in the earth quake in central Italy. It is important for the people of Italy and the European Union to stand united during this trying time while rescue efforts are still on going.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission sends her deepest sympathy to all individuals and families affected by the earth quake, and sends her prayers and good wishes for a speedy recovery of the wounded.
