African Union Commission organizes 2nd phase Training on Tariff Reform Impact Simulation Tool (TRIST)

24 October 2017 – Dar Es Salaam,Tanzania. The Department of Trade and Industry of the African Union Commission in collaboration with the World Bank organized from 24 to 29 October 2017, a Training on Tariff Reform Impact Simulation (TRIST) for CFTA Negotiators.
The Training was organized to give a level of comfort to AU member states to undertake liberalization that will boost intra-Africa trade but also allow them to make informed decisions in terms of which sector they should liberalize immediately, which sector they should liberalize in the longer term and what policy decisions they need to take in terms of CFTA negotiations in trade in goods.
The first phase of the training which was organized from 27 to 29 July 2017 in Ghana, Accra focused on training of trainers from the RECs and regional champions. This training will train CFTA Negotiators and Statisticians from different MS.
The training is expected to give participants knowledge of the underlying conceptual framework of TRIST which will allow them to prepare and structure import data of their countries to conduct simulation exercise. In addition, the training will provide expertise to participants to design complex tariff change scenarios, conduct simulations and interpret simulation results.
The training is being facilitated by Mr. Guillermo Carlos Arenas from the World Bank.
Participants attending the second phase of the training include: Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Comoros, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo, DRC, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea , Guinea Bissau, Ghana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Saharawi Republic, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania and Regional Economic Communities (ECCAS).
