The African Union Commission has learnt with great sadness, the news of the death of the former Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E Patrick Mazimhaka, who passed away on the 25th of January 2018 and wishes to express the great loss of a distinguished leader, a true son of Africa and a Pan-Africanist. H.E Mazimhaka was the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission from 2003 to 2008, when he served under H.E President Alpha Oumar Konaré, the then Chairperson of the Commission.

H.E Mazimhaka will be long remembered for the role he played in the evolution and major transformation of our continental body, from the Organisation of African Unity to the African Union. He also played a key role in the efforts towards the restoration of peace in Somaliland.

The African Union Commission extends its heartfelt condolences to Mrs Mazimhaka and his children, his bereaved family and friends, as well as the Government and people of the Republic of Rwanda.
