Addis Ababa, 30 January 2018–The Office of the Legal Counsel finalized The Agreement between African Union and the Republic of Tunisia to Host African Institute on 28 January 2018, after a last round of negotiations conducted between Ambassador Dr. Namira Negm, the Legal Counsel of the African Union and Tunisian Government Officials in Tunis in December 2017. H.E. Prof. Victor Harison, the Commissioner of Economic Affairs of the African Union signed with H.E. Mr. Khemaies Jhinaoui, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tunisia the said Host Agreement.

This agreement has been lingering since 2015 after the AU Assembly, on May 2013 Summit, decided the establishment of the Institution under Doc Assembly/AU/12(XX).The African Union Institute for Statistics aims to promote the production of statistics of the African Union mainly by collecting, harmonizing and aggregating data published by the National Statistics Institutes of African Countries.

Ambassador Negm and a High Delegation from the Republic of Tunisia led by H.E.Khemaies Jhinaoui, the Foreign Minister of Tunisia, accompanied with H.E. SahbiKhalafallah, Ambassador of Tunisia in Ethiopia and Permanent Representative of Tunisia, H.E. Kareem Ben Bechr, Director of African Affairs Department and Ms. Sarra Amri from the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairsmet on the margins of the 32nd Summit at the AU Head Quarters to finalize the Host Agreement where Tunisia expressed its consent to the final text and reaffirmed its political commitment and honour to host this important Institution, which will be the first African Union Institute in the Country.
