Cape Town, South Africa, 8 February 2018 – The African Union Commission (AUC), Department of Trade and Industry convened the second meeting of the interim committee of the Association of Chamber of Mines and other Mining Associations of Africa (ACMMAA) at Marriot Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa.

The Interim Committee of Association of Chamber of Mines and other Mining Associations of Africa (ACMMAA) was established as part of the outcomes of the Symposium of the Chamber of Mines and Other Mining Associations that took place from 5-7 October 2017 in Namibia, Windhoek, organized by the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Mining Development Centre (AMDC). The October symposium was organized under the theme of “Leveraging the role of Chambers of Mines & Mining Associations in the implementation of the African Mining Vision” and brought together representatives of National and regional chamber of mines and other mining associations. Another major outcome of the October meeting was the formation of the Association of Chambers of Mines and Other Mining Associations in Africa (ACMMAA), a continental body that represent the voice of private mining associations.

The interim Committee meeting of ACMMAA was convened with the objective to review the Draft Constitution of ACMMAA; develop Strategy for engagement and strengthening of regions and countries with no Chambers of Mines; discuss the development of a Mutual Trust framework and to plan and prepare for the Annual ACMMAA meetings for the implementation of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV).

The interim Committee is currently comprised of Mr. Isaac Kwesu, Chair, Mr Vusi Mabena, Secretary, Mr Veston Malango, Technical Advisory, Mr Sulemanu Koney, Mr Aggrey Ashaba and Ms Melody Kweba representing the Association of Women in Mining.

The Africa Mining Vision was adopted by Heads of State at the February 2009 AU summit following the October 2008 meeting of African Ministers responsible for Mineral Resources Development. The African Union Commission and the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) has the mandate to accelerate the AMV implementation across the Continent.
