Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 26 April 2018: H.E. Mrs Minata Samate Cessouma, Commissioner for Political Affairs of the African Union Commission (AUC) and a cross-section of staff of the Department of Political Affairs (DPA) held a meeting with a Delegation from the Peoples’ Republic of China led by H.E. Mr. Yang Xiaodu, Director of the National Supervisory Commission, supported by H.E. Mr. Kuang Weilin, Chinese Ambassador to the African Union.

The main objective of the meeting was to discuss potential African Union–China cooperation in the area of anti-corruption in Africa. During the meeting, the Commissioner for Political Affairs expresses appreciation to the delegation for China’s support to the AUC and Africa as a whole, and also briefed them on the AU’s ongoing efforts in combatting corruption on the continent. On his part, Mr. Yang Xiaodu thanked the Commissioner for Political Affairs for the warm welcome extended to his delegation, and also spoke about China’s anti-corruption initiatives, including the establishment in March 2018 of the new National Supervisory Commission – the highest anti-corruption agency in China, which was formed as part of a series of reforms aimed at effectively combatting corruption in China.

In their concluding remarks, the Commissioner and H.E. Mr. Yang Xiaodu, agreed to forge closer institutional partnership to address corruption in Africa given that the issue poses a significant threat to the peace, security and political stability of the continent, and has been considered a top priority by both the AU and China.
