H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamt Receives the Letters of Credence of Two Ambassadors: Fiji and Bengladesh.

Addis Ababa, 19 April 2018 – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat received the letter of credence of two Ambassadors from the Republic of Fiji Islands and the Republic of Bangladesh, respectively.

H.E. Brigadier General Mr. Moseses Tokoitoga, the New Ambassador of the Republic of Fiji Islands, expressed his honor to represent his country to the African Union (AU). He emphasized the importance of the Climate change for the Government of the Fiji Islands and recalled the role played by his country as the President of the COP23. He further appreciated, on behalf of his Government, the advocacy done by the AU on Climate change and hopes for continued support and collaboration with the AU on the issue. Ambassador Mosese Tokoitoga also recalled the contribution of his country to peacekeeping mission in Darfur, which are serving along with the AU military troops.

H.E. Moussa Faki stressed the need for multilateralism as the only way to express solidarity in view of justice and equity. He recalled the AU’s supports to the continent and to islands such as the Fiji exposed to the climate change, in the fight against the consequences of Climate change particularly through the “Accord de Paris”. The Chairperson of the AU Commission saluted the presence of the Fiji troops on the ground in Darfur region.

The second presentation of Letter of credence to the Chairperson of the AU Commission was by H.E. Mr Monirul Islam, Ambassador of Bangladesh to Ethiopia and to the AU. He conveyed the will of his country to deepen the collaboration with the AU and its Members States, particularly in peacekeeping and women’s empowerment through microfinance, education for boys and girls, as well as in poverty alleviation, agriculture and employment. He announced that his country has been upgraded from Least Developed Country (LDC) to a Developing country and the ongoing 3 years transition to obtain full membership of developing country.

‘We welcome this good news. This successful experience of a small country with an important population and yet exposed to frequent flooding and other severe weather related disasters, could be shared with the AU Commission and the members of the PRC’, said the Chairperson of the Commission.

The Chairperson of the AU Commission welcomed both Ambassadors and expressed commitment to contributing for the success of their mandate.
