Addis Abeba, 08 June 2018 – Mr. Vang’Sy Claude Mounthault, as the first Representative of the Agency for Safety of Air Navigation in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) to AU presented his credentials to the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat at the AU Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Mr. Vang’Sy conveyed the greetings and wishes of Mr. Mohamed Moussa, the CEO of ASECNA to the Chairperson of the AU Commission. He expressed the commitment of ASECNA to share its long experience and expertise in the field of safety and Air Navigation with the AU. He also briefed the Chairperson on the ongoing key projects launched by ASECNA and how it will benefit Africa.

The Chairperson welcomed ASECNA’s first Representative to the AU and stressed the significance of its partnership with the AU against the backdrop of the launch of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM). The latter is an AU Agenda 2063 flagship project following the Yamoussoukro decision on Air transport. H.E. Moussa Faki also indicated that the implementation of SAATM will increase Africa’s fleet hence the need to strengthen its safety record in order to operate adequately within and outside the continent.

Brief on ASECNA

ASECNA (the Agency for Safety of Air Navigation in Africa and Madagascar) is a technical organisation dealing with air traffic management, which is based in Dakar, Senegal. It is currently made up of 18 member States; 17 African countries and France. The member States are as follows: Benin, Burkina, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Congo, Ivory Coast, France, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad, Togo and Comoro.

ASECNA manages 16.1 million square kilometres of airspace, covering six African Flight Information Regions (FIRs): Antananarivo, Brazzaville, Dakar (oceanic and terrestrial), Niamey and N’Djamena. ASECNA operates air traffic control centres in each of these cities.

ASECNA is considered as a special model of a regional body dedicated to the collaborative management of national airspaces. The ASECNA countries are committed to the ‘single African sky’ initiative, which is a fully-fledged symbol of regional cooperation and integration. ASECNA provides for any country, expressing the desire, to join it.
