Addis Ababa, 13 July 2018: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has appointed Professor Carlos Lopes as his High Representative to support Member States in the negotiation of a new agreement with the European Union post-2020, taking into account the expiration of the Cotonou Partnership Agreement and the decisions of the AU-EU Summit held in Abidjan in November of 2017. This appointment was welcomed by the just-concluded African Union Summit in Nouakchott.

Prof. Lopes served as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa from September 2012 to October 2016. He held several leadership positions in the United Nations system. He is currently a Professor at the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town, in South Africa, and Visiting Professor at Sciences Po., Paris. He holds a PhD from the University of Pantheon Sorbonne, France, and has written extensively on development related issues.
