African Union deploys an Election Observation Mission for the Parliamentary Elections second round in the Legislative Elections in Gabon

Addis Ababa, 23 October 2018: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), His Excellency Moussa Faki Mahamat, has approved the redeployment of a Short-Term Election Observation Mission (STO) to the Gabonese Republic to observe the country’s second round of legislative elections scheduled for 27 October 2018. The African Union had previously deployed an AUEOM in the first round of these elections that coupled with local and organized on 6 October 2018 in the country.
The African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) comprises thirty - (30) observers deployed from 23 October to 2 November 2018 in Gabon. This redeployment reiterates the mandate and commitment of the African Union to promote democratic values and governance in the continent, in accordance with the legal framework in force in Gabon as well as regional, continental and international provisions on democratic elections. The overall objective is to contribute to the consolidation of democratic gains, peace and stability in Gabon in particular and in Africa in general.
The mandate of the AUEOM includes, among others, various instruments of the African Union: (a) the African Union Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring Missions (2002); (b) the OAU / AU Declaration on Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa (2002); (c) the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (1981) and (d) the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (2007). The conduct of free, fair and credible elections in Member States is a prerequisite to the realisation of the AU’s aspirations and its global vision of ensuring an integrated, peaceful and prosperous continent.
