Nairobi, 6 March 2019: The Department of Political Affairs (DPA) of the African Union Commission (AUC) in collaboration with the East African Community (EAC) has convened a strategic meeting of senior officials of the EAC Forum of National Electoral Commissions from 6 to 8 March 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya. The strategic meeting aims at strengthening the capacity of the EAC National Electoral Commissions Forum order to be more effective and responsive to the needs of the Election Management Bodies (EAC) in the EAC Partner States.

The joint strategic meeting is the first engagement by the AUC specifically targeting capacity building of the EAC Forum of National Electoral Commissions. The initiative is part of the DPA’s broader multi-pronged strategy on electoral assistance to EMBs through working with the Association of African Association of Electoral Authorities (AAEA) at continental level; networks of EMBs within Regional Economic Communities (RECs) at regional levels; and directly supporting EMBs at national levels.

In the course of the year 2019, the DPA has also prioritized assisting the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) in establishing its regional network of EMBs. Enhanced capacity of regional networks of EMBs constitute important pillars for the forging of multi-level synergies towards supporting EMBs on the continent in effectively executing their mandate in organising peaceful, democratic and credible elections in an increasingly complex operational and institutional environment in Africa.

In the endeavour to inspire cross-regional peer-learning, the DPA has facilitated the opportunity for the EAC EMBs forum to draw on experiences from the Electoral Commissions Forum of SADC countries (ECF-SADC) as well as the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC).
